Hosts Australia batted first after winning the toss in the First Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today. India put in a good bowling show overall to take six wickets. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets. Zaheer Khan in his comeback game after injury took two wickets in two balls in the afternoon session while off spinner R Ashwin got the wicket of a well set Ed Cowan.

Here is how the wickets fell down on Day 1 :

Over 13.1 U Yadav to DA Warner, CAUGHT, Umesh strikes with a wicket straight after the rain break! This is banged in short from round the sticks and Warner goes for a pull around leg but only to glove it and the ball lobs up in the air down the legside for an easy catch for MSD. DA Warner c Dhoni b Yadav 37 (49b 4x4 1x6) Australia : 46 for 1 (13.1 Overs)

Over 15.1 U Yadav back to over the sticks now to SE Marsh, CAUGHT, Marsh stretches forward and plays a loose square drive on the rise, and does that uppishly towards backward point where Kohli takes a low catch!! SE Marsh c Kohli b Yadav 0 (6b 0x4 0x6) Australia 46/2 (15.1 Overs)

Over 48.3 U Yadav to RT Ponting, CAUGHT, Yadav strikes again, pace and bounce from him to force Ponting to nick him behind to Laxman at second slip! The ball also nipped away nicely off the seam and Ricky had jabbed at that with hard hands. RT Ponting c Laxman b Yadav 62 (94b 6x4 0x6) Australia 159/3 (48.3 Overs)

Over 64.2 Z Khan to MJ Clarke, BOWLED HIM, Clarke stays in the crease and looks to play a forcing cut through point but the ball jags back off the seam to take the inside edge and crash onto the stumps! MJ Clarke b Zaheer Khan 31 (68b 5x4 0x6) Australia 205/4 (64.2 Overs)

Over 64.3 Z Khan to MEK Hussey, CAUGHT, oh well this may not be the right decision but nevertheless Zaheer is rewarded with a second wicket in consecutive deliveries! He is on a hat-trick! Perhaps Hussey was expecting a length delivery but this was nasty rising delivery that took off the seam! Hussey was trying to fend it off and was beaten. The ball wasn't close to either the glove or the bat but the Umpire was foxed in giving the decision in the favour of the fielding side. MEK Hussey c Dhoni b Zaheer Khan 0 (1b 0x4 0x6) Australia 205/5 (64.2 Overs)

Over 67.1 R Ashwin to Ed Cowan, CAUGHT, oh no another decision that isn't alright at the MCG! Cowan went back for a forcing cut to what was a drifter from Ashwin and seemed to have got an edge to the Keeper. The appeal looks convincing and the Umpire gives it out but replays show otherwise and Cowan isn't happy at all! EJM Cowan c Dhoni b Ashwin 68 (177b 7x4 0x6) Australia 214/6 (67.1 Overs)
