Otago Volts, the team that dominated its opponents in the Qualifying Stage looks to be the hot favourites to win the CLT20 2013 after a powerful performance against the Perth Scorchers. Opener Neil Broom with a sizzling century and Ryan ten Doeschate with his muscular hits batted out Perth from the game with a massive total of 242 for 4. Although Perth Scorchers made a fight out of it, there were always lagging behind and in the end went down by 62 runs.

It was a bad decision to bowl first on a flat track from Simon Katich although left-arm pacer Joel Paris struck in consecutive balls to reduce Otago to 9 for 2. Paris got the prized wickets of Hamish Rutherford (lbw while flicking at a full length inswinger) and Skipper Brendon McCullum (lbw to a yorker) in the 3rd over. Perth’s joy of making these early inroads were short lived as the pair of Neil Broom and Derek de Boorder repaired the damages in no time.

Wicket Keeper De Boorder scored 45 from 28 balls before he was bowled by left-armer Adam Voges in the 10th over. Ryan ten Doeschate, who replaced him, joined forces with opener Neil Broom to take the Perth bowlers to the cleaners. Broom, who got to his fifty in 34 balls, doubled it to a 100 in the next 17 balls. The New Zealand discard batted through the innings with an unbeaten 117 from 56 balls with 9 fours and 8 sixes. Ryan ten Doeschate was simply destructive, smashing 66 from 26 balls with 3 fours and half a dozen sixes.

Perth Scorchers, having lost the game in the first half, were reduced to 11 for 3 even before the 2nd over was completed. Ian Buttler had his role in all the three wickets which also included a run out. After the top order vanished, it was just some face saving exercise from Adam Voges (36 from 27 balls) and Hilton Cartwright, who finished the match with an unbeaten 69 from 53 balls. Perth Scorchers ended up on a high at 180 for 6 but no way near Otago’s total of 242.
